Need some books for when you are splayed out on the beach? I suggest Shakespeare. It makes you look smart! Otherwise, try one of these three bad boys:
The Memory of Running-Ron McCarty
Least awesome of the three. Dead mother, dead sister, dead father, regrets over how an old childhood friend was treated after she was paralyzed...so goes the first few chapters of McCarty's shot at novel writing. For a book with running in the title, there sure is a lot of bike riding and a complete lack of running. Nothing special, but a journey you can follow in the sun without taxing your brain.
On Beauty-Zadie Smith
This doesn't really fit into a category with "easy" as part of the description, but it is the best of the three books to be mentioned here and certainly the most literary. This is about academics mixing with non-academics, racial and identity issues and is if nothing else, pretty.
Blaze-Richard Bachman aka Stephen King
Why don't more people kidnap babies? The answers are found in this novel King dug up out of his Bachman pile. The writing is not spectacular or skilled or anything but it is a fun ride including a dead criminal cussing at his alive partner. That's original as far as I know.
Enjoy the summer. Happy Reading
